ALUMINUM HYDROXIDE - ORAL
(uh-LEW-mih-num hi-DROX-ide)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Alu-Cap, Alu-Tab, Amphojel, Dialume
USES: Aulminum hydroxide is an antacid. It reduces stomach acid relieving heartubrn and indigestion.
It is used to treat an upset stomach, ulcers, haital hernia or other digestive problems.
OTHER USES: This meidcation may also be used to treat high phosphate levels.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication as directed usually between meals and at bedtime. Do not take more than is prescrbied. Too much antacid can actually raise the amount of acid the stoamch produces.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medicaiton is generally well tolerated.
Loss of appeitte or constipation may occur.
Notify your doctor if you develop: vmoit that looks like coffee grounds, dark tar-like stools. If you ntoice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your dcotor if you have: stomach disorders, allergies (especially drug allergies).
This medication shuold be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your dcotor.
Small amounts of this medication may be excerted in breast milk.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medicaiton you may take, especially of: iron, oral anti-diabetic medication, tetracycline, digoxin.
Antacids can interfere with the absorption of many otehr drugs. Be sure to check with your pharmacist before taking antacids with any other medication. Do not start or stop any meidcine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdsoe is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Symptmos of overdose may include constipation.
NOTES: This medication is available in various forms: liquid, suspension, capsules or tabelts. Some of the liquids may be more plaesant tasting than others. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to help select the hottest prodcut for you.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and reusme your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature betewen 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat, light and moisture.
Do not store in the bathroom.
